Martin certified as an econmic development professional

William A. Martin

Bill Martin, chief executive officer of the Harlingen Economic Development Corporation, has been recertified by the International Economic Development Council (IEDC).

Martin became a “Certified Economic Developer” (CEcD) in 1986. At the time, he was among only 650 persons to achieve the Certified Economic Developer status.

The Certified Economic Developer is the leading industry designation. In order to attain the CEcD status, participants must have extensive experience in economic development, complete a graduate program of training and pass a rigorous examination.

CEcDs are required to participate in a combination of continuing education activities and service to the economic development profession in order to maintain their CEcD status. CEcDs are required to recertify every three years.

Martin has served as chairman of the Southern Economic Development Council, the largest and oldest regional organization for economic development professionals in the U.S.; as vice chairman of the Washington Economic Development Association; and as chairman of the Kansas Economic Development Association. Martin currently serves as chairman of the Rio South Texas Economic Council, a bi-national economic development marketing organization.

The CEcD program is administered by the International Economic Development Council. Martin served on IEDC’s Certification Board, the board that sets the standards for CEcDs, from 1990 to 1994. There are currently 1,200 Certified Economic Developers.
