The University of Texas Rio Grande Valley School of Medicine

In 2009, the Texas Legislature approved for The University of Texas System Board of Regents to create a medical school in the Rio Grande Valley. The University of Texas Rio Grande Valley School of Medicine welcomed its first class of medical students in 2016, and is growing at an incredible pace.

The UTRGV School of Medicine hosts both medical students and medical residents that are serving in regional hospital-based training programs.

First and second year medical students attend classes in Edinburg.  These students then come to Harlingen and continue studies at the UTRGV School of Medicine Clinical Education Building in Harlingen, and begin participating in clinical rotations in local clinics and hospitals.

Harlingen UTRGV School of Medicine facilities also include the GME, or Graduate Medical Education office, featuring an outstanding library and an amazingly realistic Smart Hospital, a 15,000 square foot, 20 bed simulation hospital.

The Smart Hospital allows the students to do hands on training in a fully equipped operating room and Intensive Care Unit, ICU.  Students pursuing studies in social work, occupational therapy, pharmacology, nursing, and and other fields also train at the Smart Hospital as well. Really an asset for the school as well as for the community.

UT-Rio Grande Valley School of Medicine is now developing a new Institute of Neurosciences on 35 acres of land located adjacent to Harlingen’s Medical community.  The new Institute of Neurosciences will advance medical research efforts on neurology and brain health, psychiatry, alzheimer’s and a host of other important mental health issues.  Once completed, the new facility expected to be between 50,000- to 70,000-square-feet.

Clearly the UTRGV School of Medicine is going to have an incredibly positive impact on Harlingen and the entire Rio Grande Valley region.  There are already many new projects being planned that will continue impacting growth for years to come.

Does this growth create new opportunities for you or your company?  The staff at the Harlingen EDC is here to help you bring your business to Harlingen.

South Texas VA Health Care Center At Harlingen (STVHCS)

The Department of Veterans Affairs recognized the need for an expansion of Veteran’s health care services in Deep South Texas and approved the formation of a new health care system encompassing twenty counties comprised of the Laredo, McAllen, Harlingen and Corpus Chrisiti service areas.

The VA Health Care Center is a virtual health care system providing secondary and tertiary health care in medicine, surgery, psychiatry, and rehabilitation medicine.  It operates a 100-Patient Home Based Primary Care program, and a 200-Patient Care Coordination Home Tele-Health Program.

Through the utilization of two complex inpatient/emergency department contracts, approximately 1,600 inpatient admissions and 1,200 ER visits are managed by local hospitals for the VA Health Center at Harlingen.  Affiliated with the Regional Academic Health Center (RAHC), the system has an active ambulatory care program and serves as a teaching and training site for  medical residents.  It is responsible for an enrollee population of over 40,000 veterans and 300,000 outpatient visits annually.
