South Texas VA Health Care Center At Harlingen (STVHCS)

The Department of Veterans Affairs recognized the need for an expansion of Veteran’s health care services in Deep South Texas and approved the formation of a new health care system encompassing twenty counties comprised of the Laredo, McAllen, Harlingen and Corpus Christi service areas.

The VA Health Care Center is a virtual health care system providing secondary and tertiary health care in medicine, surgery, psychiatry, and rehabilitation medicine.  It operates a 100-Patient Home Based Primary Care program, and a 200-Patient Care Coordination Home Tele-Health Program.

Through the utilization of two complex inpatient/emergency department contracts, approximately 1,600 inpatient admissions and 1,200 ER visits are managed by local hospitals for the VA Health Center at Harlingen.  Affiliated with the Regional Academic Health Center (RAHC), the system has an active ambulatory care program and serves as a teaching and training site for  medical residents.  It is responsible for an enrollee population of over 40,000 veterans and 300,000 outpatient visits annually.
